Youth Triathlon Training
To prepare for a triathlon, start with a two-month base training program, followed by a focused three-month preparation. For the 2025 Cal Tri Castaic Lake Sprint Triathlon, begin training in January. During January and February, a high school swimmer, for example, would want to do two sessions focusing on cycling and running each week. In March, the swimmer would want to do more focused swim and bike training geared towards increasing power and VO2 Max. Once swim season ends, the athlete would switch to daily training with a focus on all events and two coach-led sessions per week.
Monthly Training
For $189 per month, you get a Zwift membership and use of a bike trainer (for those 4’11” or taller), dry land swim trainer, and Bluetooth treadmill. You also get two flexible 1.5-hour indoor training sessions per week with multi-discipline and transition training. Running speed intervals are held Tuesdays from 6:00-7:30 pm. During cross country, winter track, and spring track seasons, triathletes can join running sessions. Athletes must purchase their own running shoes and clipped bike cleats; optional gear includes road bikes, tri-suits, wetsuits, and other competition equipment. Dry land swim trainers are available when Castaic Lake is closed, but athletes should participate in community swim for basic freestyle skills. Clinics at Castaic Lake will cover open water swimming, sighting, and transitions, not more basic swim skills.
