Convenience and Control of Treadmill Training

Writer: Jarod EbenhackJarod Ebenhack

One of the most valuable investments I've ever made was purchasing a treadmill. It's not just a piece of equipment collecting dust in my home; rather, it sees daily use by myself and by other family members. It's essential for maintaining a rigorous endurance training schedule, especially with my current focus on Nordic lactic training.

Dr. Jack Daniels rightly points out that one of the biggest advantages of treadmill running is the precise control over exercise intensity (Daniels’ Running Formula, p. 67). This control is crucial for my training regimen, allowing me to lock in a pace and adjust the incline to 1%, making the workout more challenging. Even when faced with discomfort from lactic acids, I'm compelled to maintain steady turnover and complete my run without falling off the back of the treadmill.

I also incorporate Robin Sharma's 20/20/20 method into my mornings, where the treadmill plays a pivotal role in my twenty-minute sessions of vigorous exercise immediately after waking up. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, this involves a tempo run, while on the others, it's a steady-state run. The convenience of transitioning seamlessly from my bed to the treadmill to my morning reflection and study routine at the kitchen island is invaluable.

While treadmill running can sometimes feel monotonous, I've found a solution through the Zwift app on my laptop. Each morning, I participate in a virtual 5k run alongside individuals from around the globe, enjoying the dynamic scenery and camaraderie. This app not only connects me with runners worldwide but also integrates seamlessly with Strava, allowing me to track and share my progress with others. The treadmill provides the app with my speed data, and my watch provides it with HR and cadence.

To enhance my experience, I have a curated playlist that energizes my runs. I can listen using my AirPods or, if everyone is awake, my treadmill speakers. This helps maintain my focus and cadence, especially during slower-paced or steady-state runs.

As a father of seven living in Southern California, the treadmill offers me a rare opportunity to multitask effectively. It allows me to supervise my children while my wife attends to her tasks without interruptions. Moreover, it's a crucial resource during periods of smoky air from wildfires, ensuring I can continue training without compromising my health.

Maintaining a positive attitude is paramount when using the treadmill. Approaching each session with gratitude for the convenience and control it provides transforms what some may call a "dreadmill" into a beneficial indoor running experience. I appreciate the ability to dictate pace, incline, scenery, and music, making treadmill runs often preferable to outdoor sessions. With apps like Zwift, I've also discovered a sense of community that enriches my running journey and sets a positive example for my children regarding the importance of physical activity.

In conclusion, treadmill running offers numerous advantages when approached with the right mindset. It allows for consistent workouts regardless of external conditions, fosters community engagement through virtual platforms, and gives one complete control over all of the variables in a workout. Furthermore, it gives a family a visual testament to the benefits of integrating physical activity into daily life.
